PREFACE This report is written to provide a detailed description of a very simple model for mapping shallow landslide potential which we here call SHALSTAB. We hope that the explanation and examples we offer provide some insight into the usefulness and limitations of this model. We have worked with the model for over seven years now, and despite its simplicity we are still discovering more about how to use the model and why it gives certain results. We have not attempted here to provide a scholarly overview on the state of landslide hazard prediction. Rather we have focused on explaining the theoretical underpinning of SHALSTAB and on its application to practical problems. While the basic model has been published elsewhere, most of the content of this report are new and reflect ongoing research results.
